Published: September 18, 2009

SEBRING - Looking for a place to hike, away from the madding crowd?

Try Jack Creek. It's in Southwest Florida Water Management District's new recreation guide, "Get Outside."

The 1,286-acre property between Sebring and Lake Placid has seven miles of unmarked interior roads for hiking. The habitat includes bay swamp, cutthroat grass seeps, sand pine scrub, hardwood hammock and pine flatwoods.

Josephine and Jack creeks run through the properties. Their water eventually goes downstream to Lake Istokpoga.

GETTING THERE

Address: 4501 Grand Concourse Road

Directions: From U.S. 27, go a few blocks south of Lake Josephine. Turn west on Sebring Lakes Boulevard. Two trailheads start on Grand Concourse.

Access to a short one-way trail is available on Northern Boulevard. Access to all trails is available on Hines Way. There are no restrooms or water.

A map is available in the new outdoor recreation guide, which also has maps to 65 other public properties in Marion, Levy, Citrus, Sumter, Hernando, Pasco, Lake, Pinellas, Hillsborough, Polk, Manatee, Hardee, Highlands, Sarasota, DeSoto and Charlotte counties.
