ONA - A U.S. Marine died Thursday in Hardee County after his parachute failed to deploy during a training exercise.
Capt. Paul Greenberg, media officer for the Marine Forces Reserve, said Friday the unidentified Marine was pronounced dead at the scene. Legally, they are not allowed to release the victim's name until 24 hours after the next of kin is notified.
The accident happened at 3 p.m. Thursday just south of Ona as Marines were parachuting from a C130 aircraft. The Hardee County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call saying one of the members' parachute did not open.
A joint investigation by the military personnel and the Hardee County Sheriff's Office continues. Greenberg could not release any other information because of that ongoing investigation.
