LAKE PLACID - The first Madelyn Pettis Scholarship Fun Shoot will be held on Oct. 17 at Square One Sporting Clay Club, off State Road 70 West.
The cost is $75 per shooter which includes 14 stations and lunch. Deadline for registration is Oct. 7.
Pettis died in 1997 of cardiac arrhythmia. She was a 15-year-old sophomore at Lake Placid High School at the time.
According to her sister, Jessica Williams, that same year the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) began awarding one deserving graduating Lake Placid High School senior with a $500 scholarship. A few qualities that the student must possess are being outgoing, on the honor roll and involved with extracurricular activities.
Williams said it has been 12 years now and her sister's death is still "a very emotional subject."
"It always will be," she said. "I don't think it is anything I will ever 'get over.' I have just learned to deal with it."
Williams said that her family has discussed over the years what they could do to get involved and, if nothing else, supplement the NJHS scholarship.
Call Jessica Williams at 441-0329 or 314-0006 for more information about the event.
