ORLANDO - Led by the solid play of junior Tyler Sanders and senior Blake Liles, the Sebring boys golf team managed to finish fifth Tuesday in the Class 2A-Region 3 tournament at Windermere Country Club.
The Blue Streaks shot a four-person team score of 332 for 18 holes over the demanding Windermere layout, with only the top two teams advancing to next week's state tournament.
Sanders shot a 78, Liles carded a 79, senior Aaron Walkup came in with an 86 and junior Sean Garner rounded out the Blue Streaks scoring with an 89.
"I'm proud of the guys because we came in fifth out of nine teams," said Sebring second-year coach Vince Liles. "The Windermere course is tough and we threw a lot of shots away around the greens.
"The course has a lot of water, the wind was blowing hard and the guys did the best they could in some difficult conditions."
Host school Olympia finished first in the nine-team tournament with a total of 303, while West Orange placed second with a 311 to claim the automatic berths to the state tournament, next week at Silver Springs Shores Country Club in Ocala.
Olympia's Joey Petronio won medalist honors with an even-par 72, while West Orange's Jordan Santiago placed second with a 73 and Steven Yang of Olympia and CJ Kelly of Lake Brantley tied for third place at 74.
"The teams in our regional were loaded with good players," said Coach Liles. "It was a great experience for our guys to play with talented players in a pressure situation.
"Blake and Tyler played well, but both of them threw several shots away and that kept them from finishing higher."
With Sebring losing only two players to graduation, the future looks very bright for the Blue Streaks on the links.
"We lose Blake and Aaron from this year's team, but we have a lot of talent coming back," said the Blue Streaks coach. "We have a good core group of players and we have some youngsters that might help us out next year.
"I'm proud of all the guys because they worked hard and we had a great season."
