SEBRING - For the second straight year, Avon Park's Elena Febre came closest to predicting her actual race time - 35 minutes, 26 seconds - to win the fourth annual Joe Jenkins Time Prediction 5k race Saturday at Highlands Hammock State Park.

Febre finished only one second off her predicted time, beating out Tina Grimes' 9-second differential. Grimes completed the 5k in 32:43.

Joe Bird came in third - finishing in 45:14, 14 seconds off his predicted time - and Dorothy Hicks placed fourth, coming in 14½ seconds behind her predicted time of 50 minutes.

Mike Martino completed the 5k in the shortest amount of time (23:07), but he finished 53 seconds ahead of his predicted time and came in 16th overall. Danny Cole ran the second-fastest 5k time (23:18) and finished 29th, and Pep Hutchinson was third-fastest in 23:27.

The run/walk drew a field of 42 finishers and helped raise more than $1,600 for Jenkins, who has been diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's disease (ALS). Jenkins, who is a former ranger at Highlands Hammock State Park, attended the opening ceremony and waited at the finish line to offer participants congratulations upon completing the race.

The top-15 finishers on Saturday won trophies or medals.

"This is my favorite running event of the year and a credit to our caring racing community that did so much Saturday to help out," race director Chet Brojek said.
