The Spring Lake Board of Supervisors is requesting legislation to modify its current codification for the purpose of updating and streamlining the district's governing document.

The present codification document, enacted in 2005, is for the most part unchanged from the original codification of 30 years ago. The proposed legislation (codification document) addresses shortcomings in the present codification and will allow the district to better fulfill the current and future needs of the community. It updates the provisions of the district's charter to recognize popularly elected seats to the district board.

It also adds language consistent with other Florida districts to conduct mosquito control activities, fire control and emergency medical service activities within county rules, provide infrastructure for educational facilities, and allows for enforcement of deed restrictions for defunct homeowner's associations.

The proposed codification is not, as has been claimed by some residents, a power grab, but provides the district with the necessary authority to act in the best interest of the community. At the appropriate time as our community develops and grows, reasonable citizens may wish to take measures to provide for public safety, education and an improved community appearance. These revisions will provide the authority to address those future endeavors.

The allegation that the board of supervisors is violating their oath of office is unfounded and insinuations that the board members are corrupt are baseless, irresponsible and insulting. In fact, the board of supervisors is acting responsively and through this legislative initiative is attempting to position our governing body with the necessary authority to meet the challenges of growth in the future.

The citizens of our community are encouraged to participate in the process and attend meetings where they may voice their ideas, concerns and opinions which serve to help our elected officials as they act on issues relevant to the community.

Supervisor
Spring Lake Improvement District
