AVON PARK - For the last week, Sandy and Bill Carro's RV workshop has been turned into Santa's workshop as they prep their boat float for Avon Park's Christmas parade.
On Monday, Nov. 30 the Carro's float and about 90 other units will be going down Main Street at 7 p.m for the annual Christmas parade.
In between customers at Stewart's Mobile Village, an RV service and repair business, the Carro's have been putting up lights, Christmas garlands, bows and boxes of wrapped Christmas presents to their 24-foot boat.
The couple has been eager to go from parade spectators to participants.
"It'll bring some smiles to the kids' faces," Bill Carro said. The Carro's boat will have about 20 family and friends in Christmas gear, including their grandkids, nieces and nephews who will be dressed up as Santa's elves.
"The kids love parades," Sandy Carro added.
They named their boat after their granddaughter Alexa Hall "Lexie Faye" who passed away two years ago at 3 months old. The family wanted to honor her at this year's parade.
"She would love this. She's an angel now and will be with us in spirit during the parade," Sandy Carro said.
In the back of their shop, red and white spray paint and Santa hats were sitting on John Carro's work bench, along with his handyman tools. John Carro, Bill Carro's son, was spray painting an 8-foot cardboard tube that'll be a candy cane on the float.
Sandy Carro helped her husband place lights and bows with bells along the rim of the boat.
"Now that were in it we realize how much work it takes.
"It's definitely family project," Sandy Carro said.
What to expect
Several thousand residents are expected at the parade and the Avon Park Chamber of Commerce is encouraging them to bring their lawn chairs.
Residents can line up along Main Street to see about 90 units, including floats, Avon Park High School and Middle school bands, dance groups, military organizations, antique cars and fire trucks.
Food will be sold by Avon Park High School band boosters and the funds will go toward supporting the band.
For more information or to participate in the parade, contact the Avon Park Chamber of Commerce at 863-453-3350.
