LAKE PLACID - A Lake Placid Middle School student was arrested Wednesday after school officials reportedly found a gun in his book bag.
The 15-year-old was charged with possession of a firearm on school property, a third-degree felony.
Kerry Lanier, the dean of students, told Highlands County Sheriff's School Resource Officer Martin McKee she'd received information the student was in possession of a gun, according to the arrest report.
Lanier looked in the juvenile's book bag and reportedly found .22 caliber firearm that was wrapped in a bandana. No ammunition was found.
The student told McKee he had the gun with him for protection, the report stated. He was taken to the Department of Juvenile Justice's Bartow detention facility.
