Clerk of courts office recognized for financial reporting

SEBRING - The Highlands County Clerk of Courts office was recently recognized by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA).
Clerk of Courts Bob Germaine was presented with a Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for the Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR) and the Award for Outstanding Achievement in Popular Annual Financial Reporting (PAFR), according to a press release. They were given in recognition for the previous fiscal year.

The Excellence in Financial Reporting award has played a major role in improving the quality of financial reporting in the public sector, according to information from the GFOA's Web site.

"The Certificate of Achievement is the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting and its attainment represents a significant accomplishment by a government and its management," the press release stated.

It is the 25th non-consecutive year the local clerk's office has won the award.
Deputy clerks Lois Huff and Kimmie Mathew were both presented the Award of Financial Reporting Achievement for their contributions to the CAFR.

The PAFR award goes to the clerk's office for the second year. Roberts said very few counties actually do this type of reporting and in 2006, only eight counties and five cities in Florida received the honor.

In order to receive the award, the PAFR's contents must "conform to program standards of creativity, presentation, understandability and reader appeal," the release stated.

Jerome Kaszubowski, senior director of business services, said the local clerk's office was notified in mid October about the award, one that they apply for every year.

"It just takes a highly qualified staff and our staff are well trained," he said.
