AVON PARK - Police say an Avon Park man led them on a short chase early Sunday morning that continued even after he ran off the road and flipped his car several times.

Brandon Daniel Guzman, 19, of 4200 E. County Road, Avon Park, was charged with felony counts of aggravated fleeing/eluding an officer with injury or property damage and fleeing/eluding, as well as misdemeanor counts of leaving the scene of a crash involving damage to property, operating a motor vehicle without a valid license, obstructing an officer without violence and driving under the influence that caused property damage.

He remained in the Highlands County Jail Tuesday under a $20,000 bond.

Avon Park Police Officer Earl Tilman first spotted the 2003 Hyundai Sedan Guzman was reportedly driving going 15 miles per hour in a 25 mph zone on Flippen Avenue when no other cars were on the road.

The sedan continued at that slow speed and coasted through the stop sign at West Wilhite Street, according to the arrest report. Guzman coasted through another stop sign at West Bell Street and Tilman turned on his lights to pull him over.

Guzman reportedly didn't stop and sped up to 40 miles an hour while driving on the wrong side of South Florida Avenue and running another stop sign at the West Hall Street intersection.

By the time the chase got to South Lake Boulevard, Guzman was driving 70 mph and ran yet another stop sign at the West Hal McRae Boulevard intersection all while losing traction in his tires, the report stated.

The car finally ran off the shoulder of South Lake Boulevard, crashed on the sandy shoulder near an orange grove and overturned several times.

"The vehicle received extensive, disabling damage and was later towed from the scene," Tilman wrote in the report.

Guzman ran from the vehicle and headed toward the Lakeside Park housing development, ignoring Tilman's orders to stop. After a quarter of a mile, the chase ended and the suspect was arrested.

It was later learned the car was stolen from Guzman's sister, according to the arrest report.

Guzman reportedly told Tilman he had not slept or eaten for days and was asking for a hamburger.
