SEBRING - A health care facility that has been in business 25 years this year had another reason to celebrate Thursday night.

The Lake Placid Health Care Center received the Highlands County Economic Development Commission Business Excellence Award during the EDC's annual meeting and banquet at the Quality Inn Conference Center in Sebring.

The award is presented to a company that has been in business more than three years. The selection is based in part on good business practices, expansions and involvement in the community.

The center began admitting patients in 1984.

In 1997, it opened a new 60-bed addition to bring the total capacity to 180 residents for short-term rehabilitation or long-term care.

The center has a locked Alzheimer's Unit to protect the residents that wander and a state-of-art 3,500-square-foot therapy center.

Other facts provided by the EDC include: the company has more than 200 associates with an annual payroll of nearly $6 million, turnover in employees is only 15 percent in an industry with normal turnover rates that are much higher, total occupancy averages 90 - 95 percent.

Since 1999, the facility has been recognized by its parent company, Gulf Coast Health Care, with awards as one of the top six nursing facilities and top six nursing departments and best volunteer program.

"This is quite an honor," said David Smith, the center's administrator, after receiving the award.

Smith said he was pleased that the EDC recognized that health care is an important industry in Highlands County.

More than 100 people attended the banquet that was held pool side at the Quality Inn.
