LAKE PLACID - A two-vehicle accident Wednesday on State Road 70 in Highlands County claimed the lives of an adult and a small child.
Lt. Chris Miller, with the Florida Highway Patrol, said Thursday afternoon the victims have not been identified yet. Families have also not been notified.
A 2000 Toyota van was eastbound on SR 70 when it moved into the westbound lane and was hit by a tractor-trailer driven by Melvin Funes, 50, of Miami, according to the FHP.
The tractor-trailer landed on top of the van and both vehicles caught on fire. Funes was taken to Florida Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. The medical examiner's office will positively identify the two victims, the FHP said.
Total damages from the crash came to $23,000. Everyone involved was wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident.
