SEBRING - Kevin Edmonds described the five years of operating RJ Gator's restaurant in Sebring as a "beautiful run."

It will come to an end this weekend, as the casual, neighborhood eatery will be closing its doors. Edmonds, the co-owner, said Sunday will be the restaurant's last day in business.

Edmonds said weekly sales have dropped off $20,000 compared to 2007. He said 2008 "was bad" and this past tourist season "wasn't good at all.

"We're another victim of the economy – unfortunately," Edmonds said

The restaurant opened in December 2003.

Edmonds, who owned the eatery with his brother, Jack, said they had more than 100 employees when it opened. That number has been reduced to 40.

As far as the reaction from the employees, Edmonds said there was a laid-back atmosphere at the restaurant.

"There is a lot of sadness but nobody is boo-hooing," he said, noting they have asked for letters of reference.

Edmonds said he thinks everybody in the restaurant industry is struggling.

"People have to adapt to a new economy," he said.

A big plate full of food for $11.95 is a thing of the past, according to Edmonds. It is more likely diners will be ordering a small plate of food for $7.95.

Interestingly enough, bar sales are "real good," at RJ Gator's, Edmonds said.

The building, located at 2521 U.S. 27 N., is being leased, he said. It is owned by Prickett Partners.

Jack Prickett, owner of Prickett Partners, said Thursday there are three people interested in the 5,000-square-foot building located just north of The Home Depot. Prickett declined to identify them, but said he is close to an agreement.

"Kevin has been a great part of the market," he said. "We're hoping to have another good tenant."

"We appreciate the support," Edmonds said.
