Teacher birth places stir social studies interest

LAKE PLACID - Where in the United States was your teacher born?

Lake Placid Elementary students are learning social studies in a unique way.

They are given clues about where their teachers were born on the school's morning broadcast, WLPD, and they use the clues to locate the state in question.

The PTO supplied the paint and several staff members, teachers, parents and a few students painted a United States map and a world map on a covered concrete area used by the P.E. coaches and staff.

The teachers have had their pictures taken standing on the map in the state where they were born - from sea to shining sea.

It is the staff's hope to make social studies more interesting and lead them to explore Florida and the rest of the United States. Many of the students may travel only as far as Orlando or Tampa, but they will know about the other states through the questions about what each teacher thinks is important about their birth state.
