SEBRING - A man pleaded no contest Wednesday to charges that stemmed from a 2007 incident where he kidnapped his ex-girlfriend.
David Michael Yates, 41, of last known address 2265 Cross Roads, Lucedale, Miss., entered the plea to the charges of armed kidnapping and armed car jacking, according to records from the Highlands County Clerk of Courts. He will be back in court June 1 for a sentencing hearing, since a pre-sentence investigation was requested.
The defendant could face 20 years in prison on the charges.
In December 2007, a Kissimmee River Estates woman reported that Yates, her ex-boyfriend, broke into her home, kidnapped her and drove her into Okeechobee County, according to a Dec. 28, 2007 Highlands Today report.
Both Yates and the victim had reportedly lived together for four years before breaking up about six months before the incident.
Investigators said at the time that Yates forced her into her own vehicle and drove her to Okeechobee County. The victim was held at knife point, but said she was not cut.
