AVON PARK - The Lake Placid boys and girls tennis teams are hitting their strides at just the right time.
The Green Dragon girls held off Avon Park by a score of 5-2 at the South Florida Community College courts on Thursday afternoon, while the Lake Placid boys squad cruised to a 7-0 win over the Red Devils.
"It was a good match and all the girls learned something from their matches," said Lake Placid coach Jennifer Miller. "We're fairly young and the girls have been working hard to improve their games.
"This was our first match against Avon Park and they played us tough, but we managed to hang in and get a nice win."
At No. 1 singles, Avon Park senior Angie Carrillo outlasted Lake Placid junior Jessica Landers, while Green Dragon Tara Henderson edged Red Devil Kayla Lockhart at No. 2 singles.
Lake Placid's Jalitza Serrano won at No. 3 singles, while Ana Heredia took No. 4 singles and Green Dragon junior Sierra Weaver won at No. 5 singles.
Lake Placid's Deta Waller and Weaver teamed up to win No. 2 doubles to clinch the Class 2A-District 9 victory for the Green Dragons.
"The girls had a good time," said Miller. "The Avon Park girls were very nice and we wish them the best of luck the rest of the season."
The win improved Lake Placid to 3-6 on the season.
"This win should give our confidence a boost," said Miller. "We've got a week off for spring break and then we need to get ready for the district tournament in three weeks.
"We want to be peaking and playing our best tennis when the districts come around."
The Lake Placid boys, which hosted the Red Devils, got rolling quickly as senior Martin Oseguera won No. 1 singles over Nolan Jahna by scores of 6-0, 6-2, while Andy Olivares outlasted Red Devil Mitchell Guerndt at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 4-6, 10-3.
At No. 3 singles, Green Dragon junior Andreas Berg knocked off Michael Hill by scores of 6-3, 6-3, while at No. 4 singles, Lake Placid junior Michael Sweat eased past Avon Park's Robert Brown, 6-3, 6-1.
Green Dragon freshman Jacob Underwood beat Kyle Jahna at No. 5 singles, 6-1 6-2.
At No. 1 doubles, Lake Placid's Michael Trujillo and Vinny McNamee cruised past Nolan Jahna and Guerndt, 8-1, while at No. 2 doubles, Berg and Evan Chaput beat Hill and Memphis Todd, 8-4.
"It was a good day for us," said Green Dragon coach Dennis Berard. "This was our last home match and it was neat that all the kids got to play and enjoy helping the team win.
"It was a nice way to end our season at home and now we get a week off for spring break."
The win improved the Green Dragons to 3-6 on the season.
"We have two away matches the week we come back from spring break," said Berard. "That should help us get the rust off and then we have the district tournament after that.
"The kids deserve a break and hopefully, they come back fresh and ready to play their best tennis."
