LAKE PLACID - A sunny and windy day led to high-scoring games in Lake Placid Senior softball league play on Wednesday at the Lake June ballfields.
The Seminole Tire team kept pace with the idle league-leading Lake Placid Marine Team with a 30-26 victory over the hard luck Central Security team.
Ed Engler, a 62-year-old Ohio native and retired high school teacher, had a monstrous day at the plate for the Tiremen, with two home runs (one a grand slam) and a total of 5 hits producing 11 RBI.
In addition to his teaching, Engler also taught part time at the University of Akron teaching Social Studies and Japanese history and culture, holds a Professor Emeritus rank there, taught a year at a college in England and taught history and adult education at South Florida Community College for three years.
He occasionally plays with instrumental groups as a keyboardist and after being a "snow bird" for some 5 years, he became a full time Highlands resident in 2003.
Teammates Tom Walsh and Gary Steeves were 4-for-6 and Cliff Bluml, Glen Minnick, Fred Moore, Gary Van and Drew Whittaker had three hits each with Bluml delivering a home run and Whittaker blasting a triple to help produce the record score of the league for the season.
The Security team bats were not silent. Cal Bready, Don Thomas and Larry Oser had four hits each with Oser pounding out a triple and double, John Miller had four- and two-baggers, and sub Victor Rodriquez had a triple in the losing effort.
Play on the other field was also high scoring, going down to the last out with the tying run on third and winning run on first when Schooni's Family Restaurant got the last out to post a 29-28 victory over the Michelle Yates Insurance team.
Rod Palmer, in his last game of the season, had six hits including a triple and a double, while Howard Carney, Ray Hensley, and Mike Jurmu had five hits each with Jurmu delivering two doubles, Paul Stephenson adding four hits including a double and a triple. Don Cunningham also had a double and two round-trippers for the winners.
The Hensley brothers (Dusty and Duke) had five hits each, with substitute Duke smacking out a double and home run and Dusty producing two doubles for Yates. Ray Heisenberg and Dave Holloway each added four hits and Ross Anderson and Ray Wilson had three hits each with Anderson having two doubles and Wilson one double in the losing effort
Lake Placid Marine continues to lead the league with a record of 12-6 followed closely by Seminole Tire at 12-7, Schoonis at 9-9, Yates at 7-12 and Central Security at 6-12.
The 20-game season ends March 30 with Lake Placid Marine and Seminole Tire taking it down to the wire for the league championship.
