Published: March 26, 2009

AVON PARK - Chquen Wilmot and Beonca Godfrey led the charge on Tuesday as the Avon Park girls track team took first place at the AP Invitational at Joe Franza Stadium.
Wilmot starred in the 100 meter, while Godfrey won the 200 as AP edged second-place Lake Placid, third-place Hardee, Moore Haven, Sebring and Walker.

On the boys side, Moore Haven took first place, Sebring was second, Avon Park was third, Hardee was fourth, Lake Placid was fifth and Walker was sixth.

The Red Devil boys were highlighted by Stephen Robinson's first-place finish in the 110-meter high hurdles and a third in the 300 hurdles, while James Bland set a personal best in the 800.

"Our girls are coming along and improving tremendously," said AP coach Andy Bonjokian. "The boys had a solid meet - we're working on a few things and playing with some lineups to be best prepared for districts."

Sebring's day was highlighted by Zykeria Dawkins, who ran well in the 100 and 200, while the boys 4x100 relay took second with the last-second substitution of Clarence Counts. JC Howard also won his heat in the 200.

"I feel like we're getting closer and closer for districts," said Sebring coach Renee Crenshaw. "Overall, I'm happy with them, a lot of our boys and girls have matured a lot since last year."

Sebring, Avon Park and Lake Placid are back in action on April 7, when the County Championships are held at Firemen's Field. Events begin at 4:30 p.m.

BASEBALL: Sebring, 2, DeSoto 1

ARCADIA - Kevin Welborn threw six solid innings and picked up the game-winning RBI in the top of the seventh on Tuesday to lead the Sebring baseball team to a 2-1 district victory over DeSoto.

The Bulldogs tied the game at one in the sixth inning of a pitching duel, but the Streaks put runners on first and second with one out in the top of the seventh. Welborn then hit a grounder to shortstop, who tried to turn a double play. But heads-up base-running by Sheldon Williams pushed the run across when Welborn beat the throw, giving Sebring a 2-1 lead.

Gus Williams the came in and shut the door in the seventh, improving the Streaks to 5-2 in district.

"Welborn threw a great game," said Sebring assistant coach Buck Rapp. "Both teams played great defense, because there were only five strikeouts between the pitchers."

The Streaks are back in action Friday at Booker. First pitch is at 7 p.m.

SOFTBALL: McKeel 13, Lake Placid 0 (5 innings)

LAKELAND - The Green Dragon softball team took its lumps on Tuesday against district power McKeel in a 13-0, 5-inning district loss.

"They're very good at the basics - they hit solid, they field solid and we helped them every way we could," said LP coach Marilyn Jones. "They did all the little things right, and the big things, too."

The Dragons are back in action on Friday at DeSoto. First pitch is set for 7:30 p.m.

SOFTBALL: Hardee 12, Sebring 1

SEBRING - The Blue Streaks were without six starters for disciplinary reasons and paid the price on Monday, as Hardee cruised to a 12-1 victory over the Blue Streaks in a Class 4A-District 10 action.

Dino Lower followed a Haley Pack triple with a double to score Sebring's lone run, and SHS coach Joe Sinness said the Wildcats took advantage of some inexperience on the Blue Streak side.

"I had to throw some girls in at the last minute after some in-house disciplinary stuff," Sinness said. "Haley pitched a farily good game with 12 strikeouts and seven hits, but we just had some inexperienced girls who were a little nervous."

Sebring is back to full-strength at 6:30 p.m. Friday when they travel to Booker.

GIRLS TENNIS: Okeechobee 7, Avon Park 0

OKEECHOBEE - The Avon Park girls tennis team ran into a tough Okeechobee squad on Monday and fell 7-0.

Angiel Carillo won her first set 6-1, but dropped the next two 4-6, 2-6 at No. 1. At No. 2, Okeechobee's Shaina Ragamat defeated Kayla Lockhart 6-1, 6-2, while Alisha Wilcox topped Heather Bass (6-0, 6-1), Kaite Walker knocked off Quinterica Gordon (6-2, 6-1), and Liz Turner got past Mariah Hodge (6-2, 6-0).

The Devils return to action today when they host Lake Placid.
