Sebring UF Student Wins Talent Show

SEBRING - Indya Martin, a freshman at the University of Florida, wrote an uplifting song about global poverty that took first place at the Serve Fest Talent Show held last month at the Ritz Union amphitheatre at the University of Florida.

ACTIONS!, a UF student organization that organizes day, week, and month-long events that focus on social and community needs, was the organization that helped put on Serve Fest and the talent show as the kick off to Raise Your Voice Month.

The goal of the Serve Fest was to bring awareness to silent issues around the world such as sickle cell disease, domestic violence, global poverty, and human rights and genocide through the medium of music. Their vision is to encourage students to take action toward social change.

At the Serve Fest there was a silent auction that raised more than $400 for invisible children, an organization that works toward the goal of changing the lives of the children in Northern Uganda through volunteer/community service based events and activities.

The people entered in the talent show ranged from Latino dancers to local artists.

Martin, who is a 2008 graduate of Sebring High School, sang a song she wrote tailored for this event called "Keep On."

Martin said the song came about after she was asked to perform in the talent show.
