SARASOTA - Led by senior Alvin Hinson's first place finish in the 169-pound weight class, the Avon Park boys weightlifting team managed to finish third in Saturday's meet at Sarasota High School.
Braden River won the 15-team meet, while Bartow was runner-up followed by Avon Park.

"I'm real pleased with our performance against some excellent competition," said veteran Red Devil coach Don Hickman. "This was a big meet with some real good programs and we did real well.

"This speaks volumes about how tough our district is because Braden River and Bartow are in our district."

Hinson won the 169-pound division with a bench press of 335 pounds and a clean-and-jerk of 250 for a combined total of 585 pounds.

"Alvin could have had a higher clean and jerk but he brought it down too soon and didn't get the call," said Hickman. "He's had a great start to the season and his hard work in the weight room is paying off."

Kenny Allen was runner-up in his weight class with a bench press of 300 and a school record of 280 in the clean-and-jerk for a total of 580.

At 129-pounds, Avon Park's Joel Cuencas finished third with a bench press of 240 and a 195 in the clean-and-jerk for a 435 total.

David Edmunsen was runner-up in the heavyweight division with a bench of 355 and a clean-and-jerk of 255 for a 610.

Irvin Williams finished fourth at 129 pounds with a bench of 250 and a clean and jerk of 140 for a 390 for the Red Devils and Marvin Williams was fourth in the 238-pound weight class with a 330 bench and 335 clean for a 665.
Avon Park is back in action on Tuesday with an away meet at Sebring and then the Red Devils are at Bartow on Saturday.

"I'm very pleased with where we're at as a team,' Hickman said. "We competed in the meet and then spent some time at the beach together.

"The kids have been working hard and deserved some time to have some fun."
