SEBRING - The Sebring softball team broke out the bats in blasting Palmetto by a score of 9-1 in a Class 4A-District 10 game on Friday night.
The Blue Streaks improved to 8-2 overall and 5-1 in district play.
Freshman Haley Pack picked up the win on the mound by allowing only two hits to go with two strikeouts.
"Haley does a good job of throwing strikes and letting the defense play behind her," said first-year Sebring coach Joe Sinness. "We hit the ball well and it's a good win, but we have a tendency to play down to the level of our competition."
Niki Helms went 2-for-3 with three runs scored, Pack went 2-for-4 with two RBI, Sam Lower scored two runs and Wendy Negrin had two hits with an RBI.
"It's nice to get the district win," said Sinness. "But I saw some things that we still need to work on to reach our full potential as a team.
"We're a very complacent team and we need to go after teams and finish them off when we have the chance."
Sebring is back in action with a key district road game at Braden River on Friday night.
"Braden River is undefeated and gave us our only district loss," said Sinness. "We beat ourselves last time we played them and this is one of those games where I think we'll be very motivated to win."
BASEBALL: McKeel 7, Lake Placid 1
LAKELAND - A lack of execution cost the Lake Placid baseball team in Friday night's 7-1 loss to McKeel Academy.
The Class 3A-District 10 defeat dropped the Green Dragons to 3-5 overall and 1-1 in district play.
"We just didn't execute," said veteran Green Dragon coach Dan Coomes. "We gave up a few hits and made a couple of errors at the wrong time.
"It was scoreless until the fourth inning and then we made some mistakes and couldn't overcome them."
Lake Placid has a district game at Mulberry on Thursday and then the Green Dragons host McKeel Academy at 7 p.m. on Friday.
"We need to hang in there and start swinging the bats," said Coomes. "There is a lot of baseball to be played and we just need to start believing in ourselves."
SOFTBALL: Frostrpoof 4, Lake Placid 0
LAKE PLACID - Getting only two hits is not a recipe for success.
The Lake Placid softball team managed a pair of hits in Friday night's Class 3A-District 10 game, but the Green Dragons couldn't turn them into runs in losing to the Bulldogs by a score of 4-0.
"We just couldn't get anything going," said veteran Lake Placid coach Marilyn Jones. "We finally got some girls on base in the last couple of innings, but we couldn't get them across the plate.
"It was just one of those nights, but we're playing better defense every time we take the field."
The loss dropped the Green Dragons to 2-5 overall and 0-4 in district play.
Lake Placid is at All Saints Academy on Thursday and then the Green Dragons host Moore Haven on Friday night.
