SPRINGLAKE - Lynn University's Megan Mangone carded a 1-under-par 71 to grab the first-round lead in the 11th annual NIU SpringLake Collegiate women's golf tournament at Springlake Golf Resort on Friday.
Lynn University leads the five-team field with a four-person team score of 302 over the demanding and wind-swept Panther Creek course.
Florida Gulf Coast University is in second at 306, Northern Illinois University, the host school, is third with a 324, Loyola University-Chicago is at 325 and Methodist University came in with a 327.
"I'm pleased with the way we played," said Northern Illinois coach Pam Tyska. "Especially when you consider we haven't played since last October.
"The girls are really enjoying being down here in Florida and we're looking forward to improving in the final round."
Trailing Mangone's 71 is Jessica Paulmann of Florida Gulf Coast with a 74, Northern Illinois' Kim Hunley is at 75 along with Kas Toomalatai of Florida Gulf Coast.
Lucy McGovern of Loyola University shot a 76 as did Lynn University's Maha Haddioui.
Saturday's final round of the 36-hole tournament was not complete at press time.
