CLEWISTON - Cody Higgins led the Streaks at the plate and on the mound on Thursday night as the Sebring baseball team ran away with a 17-7 non-district victory over Clewiston.
Higgins was 3-for-4 with a triple at the plate and threw four solid innings on the mound. Evan Lewis was 3-for-4, also with a triple, while Dylan Sanders, Joe Lazama and Gus Williams each added extra-base hits.
"We hit the ball very well," said Sebring assistant coach Chet Maxcy. "It was a back-and-forth game there and we were ahead two or three runs most of the game before we put it out of reach in the sixth and seventh.
The Streaks are back in action on March 13, when they host Braden River. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.
BASEBALL: Lake Placid 8, Evangelical Christian 0
LAKE PLACID - Dylan Callahan struck out seven over five innings and allowed just one walk and three hits as the Lake Placid baseball team cruised to an 8-0 victory over Evangelical Christian at Scarborough Field.
Brad Stayton reached base four times and David Samperi had two hits, while David Hodge added a single and a double to pace the Dragons.
"Dylan had good control," said LP coach Dan Coomes. "He threw a lot of strikes and we played good defense behind him."
The Dragons are back in action on Thursday, when they travel to Mulberry.
SOFTBALL: Sebring 13, Frostproof 1
FROSTPROOF - Sebring pitcher Niki Helms struck out 11 in a complete-game effort and hit a three-run home run on Thursday night to lead the Sebring softball team to a 13-1 victory over Frostproof in non-district action.
Sammie Lower was 3-for-4, while Jamie Hershkowitz and Priscilla Adams were each 2-for-3 for the Streaks, who pounded 14 hits and had nine of their 10 batters score a run and net an RBI.
"I held them off the first couple innings and gave them the bunt sign," said Sebring coach Joe Sinness. "That allowed them to locate the pitches and really focus on the ball."
The Streaks are back in action Friday at Braden River.
BASEBALL: LaBelle 15, Avon Park 5 (5 innings)
LABELLE - The LaBelle baseball team knocked 16 hits, including three home runs to cruise past Avon Park in non-district action on Thursday night.
It was the Red Devils' first game without an error this season, said AP coach Mort Jackson, but any celebration was short-lived as the Bulldogs feasted on Red Devil pitching.
"They pounded the ball," Jackson said. "We made the plays when the ball was hit to us, but they didn't hit that many to us."
Kyle Jackson, Buddy Duke and Ty Jackson each had multiple hits for the Devils, who hosted Palmetto on Friday (see Sunday's Highlands Today for complete coverage). They return to action on Thursday, when they travel to DeSoto.
GIRLS TENNIS: Avon Park cancelled its match with DeSoto on Thursday.
