LAKE PLACID A Lake Placid man remained in jail Tuesday on a $30,000 bond after being charged with burglary of over $1,300 worth of tools from his boss's work vehicles.
Bert Glenn Crawford, 31, of 603 N. Lakeview Road, Lake Placid, was arrested Monday on charges of burglary of an unoccupied conveyance while unarmed, theft of $300 or more and dealing in stolen property.
On Friday and Monday, Crawford allegedly took numerous tools from two of his employer's work vehicles. Those items were three tie-down straps, a tool socket set, three tractor pins, a chain saw, two Skill saws, three metal measuring tapes and a drill, according to the arrest report.
The total value of the tools was $1,371. The victim first noticed them missing on Monday.
The victim's son was in Highway Park checking on a job when he saw Crawford and told him about the missing tools, the report stated.
Crawford reportedly told the man he could get some of the tools back, but would need $50 to do it. The money was given to him and Crawford left.
The son waited for 90 minutes for Crawford to return with the stolen items, but he never did, the report stated.
Later in the day, a Highway Park resident told authorities he saw Crawford in the subdivision trying to sell items out of his vehicle.
Crawford was eventually contacted and reportedly admitted to selling a tool box earlier in the day before trying to get it back, although it was unknown why he tried to retrieve it.
During the investigation, another Highway Park resident told deputies he had bought three straps, a socket kit and a few tractor pins from a person he called "Cowboy," the report stated. The man paid $45 for all the tools.
"Cowboy" was reportedly later identified as Crawford.
Highlands County Sheriff's Deputy Kenneth Young made the arrest.
