Glades Electric Gives $3,500 To Meals On Wheels

LAKE PLACID - The Meals on Wheels of Lake Placid received a cash infusion Monday when Harold Owen, District 8 director with the Glades Electric Roundup Trust, turned over a $3,500 check for its food grant program.

The presentation took place at the Balmoral Assisted Living Facility, at 93 Balmoral Drive, in Lake Placid.

Jim Browning, president of Meals on Wheels of Lake Placid, said Monday that without such large charitable corporate donations as the one from Glades Electric, the organization would not be able to complete its mission.

It also depends a lot on private donations.

Balmoral provides the food at cost, its kitchen facilities as well as kitchen staff Monday through Friday to prepare the meals.

The organization also depends on about 15 or 16 volunteer drivers to deliver the meals and a board of directors.

Some recipients were making decisions to get their medications or to eat, he said.

Each meal costs recipients $3.75, depending on their ability to pay, Browning said.

"Many of our recipients receive the food at little or no cost," he said. "Some can only afford a quarter, but they get the meal just the same."

Some get a couple of extra meals on Fridays to get them through the weekend.

Meals on Wheels of Lake Placid volunteers deliver 600-plus meals each month to 30 to 50 recipients, depending on the time of year, said Browning.
