The article on the front page of Highlands Today on June 10, was a well deserved tribute to Fred Leavitt and the organization he has grown from the ground up here in Highlands County, The Primal Connection.
I serve on the organization's board of directors and can say without hesitation "I'm proud to be Primal." Programs like the one presented at APYA give the participants what they need to function as responsible citizens with the self-respect so often lacking.
When I was a teen growing up in South Florida we had a saying about tough guys who were often in trouble, it was: "He don't value nothing." Consequently these kids were hard or impossible to reach. The Primal Connection provides a way for youth to experience first hand the value of participation and cooperation. When they do, they make beautiful music.
