Murder suspect headed back to North Carolina

SEBRING - A North Carolina man charged with killing a Fort Hood soldier will soon be leaving the custody of Highlands County law enforcement.

Demar J. Bryan, 22, signed a waiver of extradition Wednesday morning at the Highlands County Courthouse during his first appearance. His business at the local court level is now officially concluded.

Bryan was pulled over Saturday in Sebring on a routine traffic stop. As central dispatch ran a license check, they received a hit from the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office in North Carolina that Bryan had warrants charging him with murder.

The suspect is accused of shooting and killing Charles Clements, 27, on March 29 at a nightclub located about five miles from Fayetteville.

Bryan also allegedly shot and severely wounded Arthur Mwebe, 26, a Fort Bragg soldier and friend of the victim's.

Cumberland County investigators think Bryan was trying to leave the United States and head to Jamaica.

Maj. David Paeplow, detention bureau commander with the Highlands County Sheriff's Office, said Cumberland County deputies will be notified about Bryan's extradition waiver. Then, North Carolina authorities will travel to Highlands County to pick up their suspect.
