Carlson the library commissioner

Published: June 9, 2009

Highlands Today has an article stating that Commissioner Carlson thinks that the county libraries should be used for research and not for pleasure. All we need is a politician telling us what we should read and do in the libraries that we, the public, bought and paid for.

Highlands libraries are public libraries; that means that they provide a huge range of media to include books, magazines, CDs, DVDs, etc., designed to appeal to a broad range of patrons of all ages and educational levels. They provide a much needed free or low cost form of education and wholesome entertainment for the public. Research libraries are found at universities and schools and are targeted for students pursuing specialized degrees and information.

I believe that Ms. Myers, her staff and the Friends of the Library are doing a superb job of providing what the people want in their libraries including cinema with popcorn. The fact that the libraries are full of patrons speaks for itself. Change them into research libraries and they will be empty libraries. Butt out Carlson, our libraries are doing very well without your interference!
