Republican Congress?

Published: June 2, 2009

I was humored by the letter that Terry Collins wrote. He chastises DeCaris Jones for saying that Bush had a Republican-controlled Congress.

Collins states that this is not true. Let's set the record straight.

When George Bush became president in 2001, the 107th Congress had a Republican majority. On June 6, 2001 Senator Jeffords switched parties, from Republican to Independent, thus giving the Senate a Democratic majority, the house still being controlled by the Republicans.

When the 108th Congress took control during the last two years of Bush's first term, the Republicans had an absolute majority.

The 109th Congress, convened in 2005-2007, also gave the Republicans a solid majority when Bush was re-elected for his second term. It wasn't until the 110th Congress took over in 2007 that the Democrats controlled Congress for the first time since the 103rd Congress in 1995.

It is fine for Collins to support his party, but he should have the courage to stand by them without having to re-write history, or maybe he's just listening to Fox News too much
