I read in the edition of July 25 how the county administration is unsure where to cut the budget to relieve the "gap." How about this: Let's start at the top and work our way down! Instead of cutting pay to the lower paid employees give the top administrators and department heads a 10 percent cut. How about the commissioners? Don't they all double dip? That is, they all have a primary source of income other than the county payroll and don't really need that extra $48,000 right? Give them a 25 percent reduction in pay.
Once you have gone through all the department heads and calculated the savings from their pay cuts, then look into cutting the rest of the employees' salaries. This makes a lot more sense to me. Cut the fat from places that can afford it, not from somewhere that is already lean! Why take money and jobs away from the people who can barely survive week to week? There are always other options. Step back and look first, then ask "How can I help my community?"
