Sebring advances at state

BUSHNELL - The Sebring All-Stars picked up a win in Saturday's first round of the Dixie Pitching Machine state tournament without ever throwing a pitch or swinging a bat.

Sebring players were on the field warming up for their game against the Poinciana All-Stars, but it was discovered by tournament officials that Poinciana had an ineligible player.

The Poinciana coach was given the option to compete with 11 players, but decided against that and Poinciana withdrew from the 12-team, double-elimination tournament.

The result was Sebring was credited with a 7-0 win by forfeit and moved on in the winner's bracket to take on Blountstown on Sunday.

Blountstown outslugged Port St. Joe by a score of 10-9 on Saturday.

"The kids were disappointed that we didn't get to play," said Sebring coach Eric Lewis. "But we got to practice for about an hour on the field and it gave the kids a chance to get used to the conditions and the surroundings.

"The kids are excited and chomping at the bit to play and I think we'll do fine."
