Spring Lake Golf

Published: January 29, 2009

Monday's edition of Highlands Today contained an article titled "Spring Lake May Purchase Golf Course." As a Spring Lake property owner and resident I am pleased to see this creative proposal, which under consideration by the Spring Lake Improvement District (SLID) board, receive your coverage.

I applaud the district's board members for considering remedies to a long-standing problem (over two decades) which can: 1. Adequately address critical water reclamation needs. 2. Address expressed community needs for such things as additional neighborhood parks, walking and biking paths, etc., and very importantly, 3. Do so while saving district taxpayers money over other possible remedies.

A resident quoted in the article is reported to have said that the board has not been public enough in informing residents of solutions under consideration. On the contrary, this item of business has been discussed publicly at board meetings; the public was invited to participate in a workshop on the topic and two well-attended public meetings have been held expressly to address the proposal and answer resident concerns. And, the board and district manager have made available for citizen review, a workbook containing background and finance information and other relevant factual material.

I have reviewed its contents and encourage all Spring Lake residents to avail themselves of this information. We have an opportunity to participate in correcting problems long ignored by some former SLID leaders. This creative solution now under consideration can serve to improve our community and save Spring Lake taxpayers money. To me this is a win-win opportunity, something rare in these difficult economic times.
