Plenty Of Runs In Sebring Senior Softball

SEBRING - Last Tuesday's frigid weather did not deter the Sebring Senior Softball League team members from being on the playing fields.

Stan Turl and his Rebels held on for an 18-8 victory over Highlands Bank.

Rebels' Tony Caristo was the hottest hitter going 4-for-4 with a home run. Jim Monroe, Jerry Mattis and Les Reab all went 3-for-4. Fred Boyd and Rollie Carlson came up with three hits.

Highlands Bank tried hard, but the Rebels stayed in front with their biggest feat a three- run homer by Bob Burley. The Bank Team is credited for showing increased success and coming up with eight runs.

Highlands Ridge got the upper hand over Highlands Merchants with a 12-7 win.

The Ridge scored four runs in the first inning, but the Merchants took the lead 7-5.

Ridge came up with an 8-7 score and in the top of the fifth inning scored four runs to seal the win.

Ridge's John Bielman scored the lone run, but there were six players with two hits.

Dennis Berkholz made some good plays at third base and the Merchants' Bill Todd and Wayne Hill each hit a triple and Victor Rodriquez went 3-for-3.

The Silent Salesman and Royal Palms bats were hot even on the cold, windy day.

The two teams combined for 58 hits and 43 runs with the Palms coming out on top 25-18.Leading the Salesman's attack were Richard Godfrey going 3-for-4 with a home run and five RBI.

Mike Jurmu banged out four hits, including a home run, while Don Cunningham had four hits with a double and triple.

Ray Concepcion rapped four hits, including a triple and Sergio Pierto connected for three hits in four at-bats.

Four other players added two hits each for a team effort of 27 hits for the game.

Royal Palms' Bob Weiss was high man with a double, plus a home run with six RBI.

Jim Longman and Charlie Quinn both slugged five hits and Mo Pier had a 4-for-4 day, including a triple. Ross Anderson and Doran Quigg each belted out a triple.

And now the Aluminum Discount and Blue Jays encounter, a nine-inning tussle with Aluminum defeating the Jays 12-10.

The score was tied 10-10 in the top of the ninth inning when Aluminum scored two runs and the Jays failed to score again. Aluminum Discount top players were Todd Palmer going 3-for-4 with a grand slam and David Wagner added a home run.

Thursday's Games

Thursday games scores were quite out of the norm as Aluminum Discount defeated Royal Palms 13-10 win. Aluminum was leading 10-0 until the top of the eighth.

For the Aluminum, Larry Solomon went 3-for-4 with a three-run homer, James Gilbert and Leslie Smith both had three hits.

Royal Palms' Ross Anderson hit a triple driving in three RBI, and Larry Lane was credited with a double.

The Blue Jays and Highlands Independent Bank had a final score of 16-3.

The Bank held the Jays scoreless for the first inning, and then the Jays broke loose.

A grand slam by Dick Schiltz and assistance byRuss Moody, Ed Carroll, Bob Brooks and Jim Maynard each with three hits did the final damage to the Bank.

The Silent Salesman played Highlands Merchants for the first time hits season and the Merchants prevailed 19-4.

The Merchants banged out hits at their normal pace, but the Salesman were stymied by the Merchant's strong defense. However, Mike Jurmu managed to go 3-for-3 for the Salesman and collecting two hits each were Syd Collins and Tom Royal.

Ken Filppula and Richard Godfrey connected for a triple each, but it wastoo little and too late.

The Merchants high hitters were Wayne Hill going 4-for-5 with a double plus a home run, Kyle Saunders 3-for-4 with a triple and Bill Yeager was 3-for-5 with a double. Ron Lewis was 4-for-4, while Bobby Fulcher and Jose Torres each had three hits.

An unusual game was between Highlands Ridge and the Rebels.

The Mercy Rule applied in the sixth inning with a score of 15-0, but the determined Rebels refused to concede the game. Rebels Don Purdy went 2-for-3 including a home run.

Tony Caristo went 3-for-4 and Les Reab was 3-for-3.

The Ridge smacked the heck out of the ball, with Curt Brown going 4-for-4 and scoring three runs.

John Bielman went 2-for-5 and knocked in four runs, while Walker Spence, Dennis Berkholz and Dave Majick had three hits each and Kenney Stanek was the winning pitcher.
