SEBRING Frank Gugliemi, a 15-year resident, was re-elected Friday evening as a supervisor of the Sun 'n Lake of Sebring Improvement District.
Contacted Saturday morning in his car, General Manager Al Grieshaber Jr. did not have the vote totals, but said the count wasn't close, even though the election took 12 hours.
"We didn't get out until 9:30 p.m.," Grieshaber said. "They had to verify all the proxies."
Gugliemi's opponent, Dick Miller, who moved to Sun 'n Lake in 2000, had a box full of proxies that had not been verified, Grieshaber said. Then the board had to determine if there were any duplicates.
When those proxies became ballots, they were voted, and then the five supervisors could close the poll, Grieshaber said.
With Gugliemi back on the board, Robert Severino was elected president. Diana Johnson is the new vice president.
"I'm really grateful for the great support I've gotten," Miller said Friday morning. "It's come from all sections of the community. It's come from mail-in-proxies to me, from across the country and I've gotten a lot of support from Canada. The mail-in-support has been tremendous."
Miller had hoped to change the composition of the board to at least three popular seats and two landholder seats. Since he was unsuccessful, the large landowners, like NRPI, remain in charge of the district.
