LAKE PLACID - Tom Giownik smacked three hits and an RBI, Bert Roloff had two hits and three RBI and Duke Hensley knocked a triple on Monday to lead Lake Placid Marine to a 13-12 victory over Seminole Tire in Lake Placid Senior Softball league play.
Seminole out-hit the winners by a good margin, but were unable to string their hits together. Fred Moore and Gary Van each went 4 for 4 and Jeff Stanley 3 for 4 with a triple, while 83-year-old John Ladensack, a WWII Pacific theater Navy veteran and former baseball player in the Chicago White Sox organization, was 2 for 3 in the losing effort.
In the other game, Central Security held off Schooni's for a 12-10 win, though Schooni's had the trying runs on base when the last out was made.
Dick Harmich pitched an outstanding game for the winners, and, along with teammates Don Thomas, and Richard Rivera, had three hits each at the plate. However, the biggest hit for their winners was a three-run home run by Larry Oser.
Schooni's had a slow start with several pop outs, but the bats then came alive with Howard Carney, Darrell Richards and Rod Palmer having three hits each, with a home run for Palmer. Seven other players on the Schooni's team had two hits each, but in the end, partially because of base-running errors and strong defensive plays by Central Security, they came up short.
In the other game, Seminole Tire held on for a 13-12 victory over Central Security.
Jeff Stanley led the winning offense with a grand slam among his three hits. Max Hehn, Eli Rivera, Harley Smith, Gary Van, Tom Walsh and Drew Whitaker also had three hits each for the winners. Richard Rivera was the only player on the Central Security team to have as many as three hits, but with two hits each, Cal Bready, Richard Card, Al Chips, Larry Oser, Charlie Quinn and Dana Hurlbut (one of Hurlbut's hits was a home run) were able to string them together to keep the game close.
The other game on Wednesday was also a close one with runs hard to come by as Schooni's team edged out the hard-phitting Michelle Yates Insurance 8-7.
Darrell Richards had three hits and Howard Carney, Don Cunningham, Dick Heinbeck, Ray Hensley, Mike Jurmu, and Paul Stephenson knocked twop hits each. Great fielding plays by Howard Carney, Rod Palmer and Don Cunningham on long line drive catches as well as stellar infield play my Mike Jurmu held the Yates team in check until the next to last inning. Schoonis held an seven-run lead when the Yates team bats came alive.
Jim Kahn blasted an out of the park home run with Dusty Hensley and Paul Brand on base. Dave Holloway and Harvey Jones were on base when George Lavoie hit a line shot to deep center field to bring the score to 8-7. Neither team scored in their last turns at bat.
The remarkable balance of the league is not only demonstrated by the close scores for most games, but by the fact that all teams now have identical records of 2-2. The 20-game season will continue through March at the Lake June ball fields.
