Phone Scam Reaches Fairway Pines
SEBRING - An on-going phone scam was reported to have struck Fairway Pines At Sun 'N Lake on Monday, although no one lost any money.
Paul Hinman, crime prevention practitioner with the Highlands County Sheriff's Office, said some of the tenants received "suspicious calls," with the male caller saying he was the receiver's grandson. The caller, however, could not provide a name.
The individual then said he had been in a car accident and needed $2,500 wired to a Wal-Mart so he could pay for the repairs, according to Hinman. One person was reportedly prepared to send money, but could not get to their personal funds since the banks were closed in honor of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.
Anyone wishing to report a scam should contact the sheriff's office at 402-7200.
Man Charged With Striking A Person With Flashlight
LORIDA - Henry Donald Brewington, 49, of 6008 Bay Lane, Sebring, was arrested Sunday and charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.
The suspect was fishing at the Istokpoga boat ramp and started yelling and cursing because a boater had accidently cut his lines, according to the arrest report. The victim's girlfriend asked Brewington not to use such language, at which time he allegedly started calling her "several slang names."
The victim told Brewington not to speak to his girlfriend that way. Then the suspect reportedly struck the man in the head several times with a flashlight.
The victim suffered two two-inch lacerations to the left side of his head, the report stated.
