BOYS BASKETBALL: Sebring 55, Lemon Bay 43
ENGLEWOOD - Joe Young scored a game-high 25 points and pulled down eight rebounds to lead Sebring to a 55-43 win over Lemon Bay in the Wally Keeler Classic on Friday.
Streaks head coach Princeton Harris says that his squad played some of their best basketball against the Manta Rays.
"I think we're right there as far as playing as a team and working within our offense," said Harris. "This game against Lemon Bay helps us get in the right frame of mind for the final district games, especially against Avon Park on Saturday."
Jake Trussell and Devin Clarke each scored six points in the win.
Sebring was scheduled to play archrival Avon Park Saturday night at Blue Streak gym. Look for complete coverage in Monday's sports section.
The Streaks travel to face Hardee on Tuesday with tip-off set for 730 p.m.
GIRLS SOCCER: Sebring 2, LaBelle 2
SEBRING - Lisa Pryzchocki and Maxime Copley each scored a goal, but the Streaks couldn't hold off a late rush by LaBelle in a 2-2 tie during senior night at Firemen's Field on Friday.
"The seniors really came through for us tonight," SHS head coach Steve Ashley said. "We had nearly everyone on the field and it was a total team effort for us lately."
The Streaks have been without leading scorer Amanda Grimaldo since her knee injury in mid-December has her sidelined indefinitely.
Sebring the regular season as the No. 3 seed and will play Avon Park in the opening round of the Class 4A-District 10 tournament in Palmetto at 8 p.m. on Tuesday.
BOYS SOCCER: Lake Placid 3, Clewiston 1
LAKE PLACID - Antonio Torres and Antonio Santana each scored in lifting Lake Placid to a 3-1 win over Clewiston in the final home game of the season at Roger Scarborough Memorial Stadium on Friday.
That gives the Green Dragons a win and three ties in their last four games and has head coach Josh Virkler excited about the upcoming Class 3A-District 8 tournament.
"I think we're peaking at the right time of the year," Virkler said. "We're doing a good job of attacking the goal and our passing has really improved over the course of the season.
"We still have to stay away from making too many mental errors in the back that leads to easy goals for our opposition, but I think we're on the right track."
BOYS SOCCER: LaBelle 4, Sebring 2
LABELLE - Buck Schroeder and Elisha Klatt both scored goals late in the second half, but it wasn't enough to lift Sebring past LaBelle in a 4-2 loss at Cowboy Stadium on Friday.
Sebring is back on the field Tuesday for a rematch against LaBelle at Firemen's Field. Kick-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
BOYS BASKETBALL: Lake Placid 60, Lakeland Christian 39
LAKE PLACID - Andre Wilson scored a game-high 20 points and pulled down 11 rebounds and Kirk Veley added 10 points and 11 rebounds to lead Lake Placid to a 60-39 win over Lakeland Christian in boys basketball on Saturday night.
The win was the third in a row for the Green Dragons and improved their record to 4-8 on the season.
"We had a good week and our confidence is high right now," said first-year Lake Placid coach David Veley. "We got up by ten points in the first quarter and then we used our half-court press to force the tempo in our favor.
"The guys are excited and we're playing as a team."
The Green Dragons are on the road at Mulberry in a Class 3A-District 8 game on Tuesday night.
"We haven't played Mulberry yet, but they always have some good athletes," said coach Veley. "We just need to keep playing smart and execute and we'll be in good shape."
WRESTLING
STUART - The Sebring wrestling team competed in the Martin County Duals on Saturday and injuries and a lack of depth kept the Blue Streaks from scoring a lot of points.
"We didn't have quite the showing I wanted," said first-year Sebring coach Josh Miller. "None of our guys wrestled well and we didn't match up well with a couple of teams that we competed against.
"We have a lot of holes with so many injuries and things and the lack of depth hurts our point totals."
Blue Streak senior Dustin Drummond, who injured his shoulder last week, suffered his first loss of the season in the 130-pound weight class in the highly competitive 11-team meet.
"The competition was excellent with a lot of state qualifiers in every weight class," said Miller. "We have seven freshmen and our lack of experience hurt us, but we got five quality matches in and that's only going to help us come district tournament time."
Sebring is back on the mat when it hosts Avon Park in a dual meet at 7 p.m. on Thursday and then the Blue Streaks host the annual Spiegel Memorial Tournament on Saturday.
"We're looking forward to hosting Avon Park on Thursday night," said Miller. "And the Spiegel Tournament should be a great event because we're expecting thirteen or fourteen teams to be here."
STUART - The Avon Park wrestling team went undefeated in five matches to win the 11-team Martin County dual wrestling meet on Saturday.
The Red Devils defeated Port St. Lucie 60-18, South Fork 52-28, Titusville 50-24, Okeechobee 42-39 and knocked off Fort Pierce Central 42-33.
"It was a good win for us against excellent competition," said Avon Park co-coach Lee Elder. We wrestled some different schools and against some different styles and that will only help us in the district tournament in two weeks."
James Bland won the 160-pound weight class, Kemosi Hatten finished first at 171, Omar Torres won at 189, Isuel Guzman took first at 215, Jace Grimmett won heavyweight and John Chittum claimed first at 125.
Jeff Santine went 4-1 at 119 and Charles Hubbard went 4-1 at 145.
"We started off strong and the momentum carried into the higher weight classes," said Elder. "The kids performed well and they feed off of each other.
"We executed well and that's two tournaments we've won the last two weekends and we just want to keep everybody healthy and be wrestling our best at the district tournament."
Avon Park is back on the mat when the Red Devils travel to Sebring for an away match on Thursday.
The Red Devils, who have had a wrestling program for only four years, will compete in the Spiegel Memorial Tournament on Saturday at Sebring High School.
The district tournament will be in Lake Wales on Feb. 5.
"We want to stay sharp, but we don't want to get anybody hurt," said Elder. "We've done everything we can to prepare for the district tournament and we'll let the chips fall where they may."
