The following is a letter I sent to Congress in regard to Guantanamo Bay and the use of torture.
Please support S. 147 and close Guantanamo Bay detention facility and restrict interrogation to the techniques in the Army Field Manual, as well as the other proposed changes, because it goes against what America stands for. We are a nation of people who firmly believe in the Constitution and about liberty and justice for all. To hold people without charging them, to torture them, is totally against that tenet. No matter how evil the crimes they are suspected of, we must not lower ourselves to their level.
The outgoing administration may have found these practices acceptable, which shows the rest of us their true colors, but real Americans know how truly wrong it is. It is my hope the new administration (Obama) will bring back integrity and deal with our enemies with superior intelligence and use our belief system to bring justice and peace, while maintaining our dignity and strength.
We must never again allow anger and bravado to rule our reactions. We must always remember we are Americans. We are the best at everything and have the best constitution. We must honor and uphold that constitution and remember and respect those who have fought, and those who have died defending it.
Say goodbye to the new politicians who allow their own egos to rule, and good riddance to them. We welcome a new president and a new administration, who we hope will remain faithful to the oath they take and truly represent all of us, and never again allow torture of our fellow human beings to be perpetrated by our own people.
May God bless America and God bless our new leader.
