Published: January 12, 2009

FROSTPROOF - Despite a sluggish start, Avon Park managed to beat Frostproof by a score of 62-41 in boys basketball on Saturday night.

"We weren't very efficient and it wasn't our best game, but we got the win,' said Red Devil coach Luther Clemons. "We had some unnecessary turnovers and some mental lapses.

"We led by nine at the half and pulled away in the second half."

Sophomore forward Alonzo Robinson had a team-high 16 points and pulled down a game-high 19 rebounds and Cleveland Nobles added 13 points and 10 boards as the Red Devils cruised to the easy win over the Bulldogs.

The non-district win improved Avon Park to 10-6 on the season and the Class 4A Red Devils host District 10 rival Hardee on Tuesday night.

"We've got some important district games coming up and we need to keep playing hard," said Clemons.

WRESTLING
LAKE WALES - Avon Park dominated the mat in winning the 12-team district dual wrestling meet in Lake Wales on Saturday.

The Red Devils went 5-0 as a team and knocked off Lake Wales and Haines City on their way to the team title.

"I'm really proud of the guys," said Avon Park co-coach Ed Brown. "All the teams in our district, except for Harmony, were here and we had an excellent day.

"The guys wrestled hard and did real well against good competition."

Red Devil senior Kemosi Hatten won the 160-pound weight class, senior Jace Grimmett finished first at 285, junior Omar Torres won the 189-pound division and junior Charles Hubbard claimed first in the 145-pound weight class.

"I'm extremely pleased with our effort," Brown said. "But we did find some chinks in our armor that we need to work on.

"Bringing home a first-place trophy to Highlands County made it a real good day."

The Red Devils are back on the mat with a home meet against Lake Region on Friday night and then travel to Martin County for a meet on Saturday.
LAKE WALES - The Sebring wrestling team is down in numbers and that hurt its overall score in the district dual met at Lake Wales on Saturday.

"We're still missing some guys with injuries, but we had a couple of wrestlers that went undefeated," said Blue Streak first-year coach Josh Miller.

Leading the way for Sebring was Dustin Drummond, who won his first two matches before suffering a shoulder injury, while Michael Polatty went 5-0 in the 135-pound weight class.

"Dustin was doing fine until he hurt his shoulder," said Miller. "Michael has really been wrestling well and has won his weight class in the last two meets we've competed in.

"Our depth is down right now, but we should be getting some guys back soon."

Sebring is back on the mat with an away meet on Saturday at Martin County.

GIRLS WEIGHTLIFTING

LAKE PLACID - Avon Park flexed its muscles against Lake Placid in girls weightlifting on Saturday.

The Red Devils were led by sophomore Zakia Hart, who won the 139-pound weight class, sophomore Andejoun Nixon rolled to first in the 169-pound weight class and Veronica Robinson won the 154-pound division.

Nixon had a personal best lift of 150 in the bench press and combined that with a clean-and-jerk of 130 for an impressive total of 280.

"I'm real proud of the girls," said Avon Park coach Pakitta Felix. "They are working hard to get stronger and we continue to improve with each meet we compete in."

Sophomore Tykeria Wiley won the unlimited division for the Red Devils.
Avon Park is back in action in the district meet at Sebring on Saturday.
