Published: January 11, 2009

ARCADIA - Junior guard Zykeria Dawkins hit two clutch free throws to send the game into overtime, but foul trouble cost the Sebring girls basketball team in the extra frame, as DeSoto ran away with a 46-37 district victory.
Tangie McCullors had 10 points and Hannah Shoop had eight points and 20 rebounds, while Dawkins finished with eight points and Shannon Williams chipped in six points.

"It was a close game all the way," said Sebring coach Mike Lee, who noted DeSoto scored just one field goal in overtime but sank 8 of 12 free throws. "We're past the time for moral victories.

"We've been in lots of close games and we did a lot of good things tonight. But we made some mistakes that definitely hurt us."

The Streaks are back in action on Saturday against LaBelle. Tip-off is set for 2:30 p.m.

GIRLS BASKETBALL: Lake Placid 49, Frostproof 44

FROSTPROOF - Despite head coach Shonda Legree being ejected in the fourth quarter, the Lake Placid girls basketball team managed to beat Frostproof by a score of 49-44 on Friday night.

"It was a close game, but it shouldn't have been," said Legree. "We had a couple of girls that stepped up on the defensive side of the ball and that made a difference.

"Kunshee Wilson had a solid game and it was a big district win for us."

The Class 3A-District 10 win improved the Green Dragons to 2-1 in district play and give them a much-needed shot of confidence.

"We played with a lot of intensity and effort and that's what we need to do every time we step on the court," said Legree. "We can play with any team in our district, we just have to believe in ourselves."
Lake Placid is back in action with a district road game at McKeel Academy on Friday night.

BOYS BASKETBALL: Frostproof 43, Lake Placid 42 (OT)
LAKE PLACID - Too many turnovers proved costly for the Lake Placid boys basketball team against Frostproof on Friday night.

The Bulldogs took advantage of the turnovers and an edge on the boards to hold on for a 43-42 win in overtime.

"Turnovers hurt us and we let Frostproof get a bunch of offensive rebounds early in the game," said Lake Placid coach David Veley. "We had a chance to win the game in the last few seconds of regulation, but we didn't execute an out-of-bounds play and didn't get a shot off."

Frostproof scored the first four points in overtime and the Green Dragons, who dropped to 0-1 in Class 3A-District 10 play, rallied, but came up short.

"This was one of those should of, could of games," said Veley. "We know we can play with Frostproof, which has won the district the last three years.

"We just have to stay focused, play smart and execute when the game is on the line."

BOYS SOCCER: Sebring 1, Frostproof 1

FROSTPROOF - Sebring's Buck Schroeder scored in the second half as the Blue Streaks rallied to tie Frostproof 1-1 in boys soccer on Friday night.

"We were rusty from being off for the holidays," said first-year Sebring coach Tim Boulay. "The first half was a struggle, but we got things together in the second half and looked much better."

The tie gives the Blue Streaks an 8-5-4 record as they prepare for the Class 4A-District 10 tournament in Palmetto in three weeks.

"We have a talented team and are the number three seed for the district tournament," said Boulay. "Palmetto is the top seed and has the home field advantage, but we just need to play our game and I think we'll do well."

BOYS SOCCER: Lake Placid 2, DeSoto 2

DESOTO - Lake Placid gave up the first two goals, but Antonio Torres scored on a penalty kick in the second half and Vicente Ramos scored on a rebound goal with less than five minutes remaining as the Green Dragons rallied to tie DeSoto 2-2 in boys soccer on Friday night.

"It was a good comeback for us," said Lake Placid coach Josh Virkler. "We didn't get down or hang our heads after falling behind and I'm proud of that.

"It was a good result for us and something that we can build on."

The tie gives the Green Dragons a 1-5-2 mark with three weeks left in the season.

"We're playing McKeel Academy in the first round of the district tournament and we have the talent to beat them," said Virkler. "We just need to stay healthy and play smart soccer."
Lake Placid is back on the pitch on Monday with an away match at Sebring.

GIRLS SOCCER: Lake Placid 2, Sebring 0
LAKE PLACID - Erica Resendiz and Yuribia Terrones scored goals as Lake Placid blanked Sebring by a score of 2-0 in girls soccer on Friday night.

Terrones scored off an assist from Julie Shrewsbury to give the Green Dragons a 1-0 lead at the half and Resendiz blasted a shot past the Blue Streak keeper midway through the second half for the final margin.

For Terrones, it was her team-leading 20th goal of the season, while Resendiz has scored 13 goals to go with 10 assists.

The win improved the Class 3A Green Dragons to 9-1-1 on the season.

"We've had a good season and the girls are working hard to get ready for the district tournament in two weeks," said first-year Lake Placid coach John Merlo. 'We got the rust off from the holiday break and we're focused on being at our best for the districts."
