BRADENTON - Junior Buck Schroeder scored two goals and junior Octavio Galvan added another, but the long holiday layoff was too much for the Sebring boys soccer team to overcome in a 6-3 loss to Braden River on Monday night.

The Blue Streaks' last district match of the season was a crucial one: They'll now wait to see how the district tournament seedings will shake out, though after the loss, Sebring coach Tim Boulay said Sebring could end up as the No. 2, No. 3, or No. 4 seed at the Palmetto-hosted tourney.

"It's us, DeSoto and Braden River all in the middle there," Boulay said, noting the Streaks came out slow and were down 3-0 at the half. "In the first half, we just weren't there.

"We had four or five shots off the post in the game, and that's just us being rusty."

Sebring will look to prime their games before the district tournament with four non-district matches. They start by traveling to Frostproof on Friday night.

"It's just a matter of us clicking together and getting the kinks out again," Boulay said.

The Frostproof match is set for 7:30 p.m. Sebring returns home on Monday, when they'll host Lake Placid. Kick-off is set for 7:30 p.m.

GIRLS SOCCER: Braden River 4, Sebring 0
Braden River scored two goals in the first half and the Sebring girls soccer team's offense couldn't mount an effective attack as the Streaks fell 4-0 in their final Class 4A-District 10 match of the regular season.

"We didn't play bad at all, but we just allowed a few bad goals and we were missing three starters tonight," said SHS head coach Steve Ashley. "The chemistry on this team isn't the same without Amanda in the lineup."

Sophomore Amanda Grimaldo is sidelined indefinitely with a knee injury and her prowess in net and on offense has been hard to replace.

"Opposing teams scoring on corner and direct kicks has hurt us all season," Ashley said. "I think we can play with Braden River and Palmetto. We've got a couple of weeks to work things out before tournament time."

Sebring finished 6-5-1 in the district and are battling Hardee for the third seed in the upcoming district tournament.

The Streaks are back in action tonight when they travel to face LaBelle. Kick-off is set for 7:30 p.m.

GIRLS BASKETBALL: DeSoto 57, Lake Placid 27

LAKE PLACID - Jamacia Gayle scored a team-high eight points, but the Class 4A DeSoto Bulldogs turned it on in the second half to defeat the Lake Placid girls basketball team 57-27 on Tuesday.

"We got rid of some of that holiday rust," said Green Dragon head coach Shonda Legree. "The game was a lot closer than the score dictates and I was pleased with our effort tonight.

"We came out with intensity that I think caught DeSoto off guard."

The Green Dragons trailed by just three points after the first quarter, but 11 missed free throws in the first half doomed LP, which fell behind 28-12 at the break.

Lake Placid is back on the court tonight when they host cross county rival Sebring. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
