Published: February 28, 2009

SEBRING - Bartow used a balanced offense and took advantage of a pair of Sebring errors to blank the Blue Streaks 6-0 in a non-district baseball game at Firemen's Field on Thursday night.

Gus Williams' double turned out to be Sebring's only offense of the game, as the Streaks struck out 11 times and fell to a 3-2 overall on the season.

Kevin Welborn threw five innings and Sheldon Williams threw two, and the Yellow Jackets took advantage of walks and two errors to earn the non-district victory.

"Their pitcher threw a one-hitter," said Sebring coach Hoppy Rewis. "And we didn't move against him."

"We struggled a little bit," said Sebring assistant coach Buck Rapp. "We didn't play extremely bad, but we made a few mistakes defensively and didn't swing the bats very well.

"Bartow's pitcher did a good job of keeping us off-balance with an assortment of pitches and we struck out eleven times which is not a recipe for success."

Sebring hosted DeSoto in a Class 4A-District 10 game on Friday night.

Results were not available at press time, but be sure to check out Sunday's Highlands Today sports section for the complete story.

BASEBALL: Lake Placid 11, DeSoto 6

ARCADIA - Lake Placid showed great patience at the plate in rolling to an 11-6 win over DeSoto on Thursday night.

The Green Dragons took advantage of five walks in one inning to score five runs to take control of the non-district game over the Bulldogs.

"We've got a real young team with lots of freshmen and sophomores," said DeSoto coach Whit Cornell. "We had trouble finding the strike zone and made a few mistakes that helped put us in a hole.

"We're going to keep working hard to improve because there's a lot of baseball yet to play."

The win improved Lake Placid to 2-2 on the season and the Green Dragons hosted Mulberry in a Class 3A-District 10 game on Friday night.

BASEBALL: Frostproof 13, Avon Park 1

AVON PARK - Frostproof broke out the bats in a big way en route to a 13-1 win over Avon Park in a non-district baseball game on Thursday night at Head Field.

The Red Devils were back on the diamond against Hardee in a Class 4A-District 10 game in Wauchula on Friday night.

Results were not available at press time.

SOFTBALL: Fort Meade 11, Avon Park 1

FORT MEADE - Fort Meade came out swinging and didn't look back en route to an 11-1 win over Avon Park in softball on Thursday night.

Brearnna Tate drove in AP's lone run, but coach Wade Jackson said the Devils let the game get away defensively.

"We shot ourselves in the foot," Jackson said. "Seven walks, a couple of errors and we just kind of fell apart and didn't hit the ball."

The loss dropped Avon Park to 1-4 on the season and the Red Devils played at Mulberry on Friday night with results not available at press time.

SOFTBALL: DeSoto 8, Lake Placid 4

LAKE PLACID - DeSoto took the early lead and held on for an 8-4 win over Lake Placid in non-district softball on Thursday night.

"We fell behind early and couldn't get out of the hole," said Lake Placid coach Marilyn Jones. "I'm proud of the girls because they played hard and battled back.

"We had plenty of chances with runners in scoring position, but we just couldn't get the big hits when we needed them."

Green Dragon right-hander Alyssa Allen pitched well in suffering the complete-game loss.

"Alyssa pitched well, but we made a couple of costly errors behind her," said Jones. "She and catcher Ashley Paeplow work well together and we just need to get some timely hits."

The loss dropped Lake Placid to 2-5 on the season, and the Green Dragons played at Frostproof on Friday night. They return to action next Friday, when they host the Bulldogs at 7:30 p.m.

GIRLS TENNIS: DeSoto 7, Lake Placid 0

LAKE PLACID - The Lake Placid girls tennis team played tough before dropping a 7-0 decision to DeSoto on Thursday afternoon.

Green Dragon Jessica Landers played well in defeat, as did Tara Henderson, Jalitza Serrano, Johneesia Sholtz and Sierra Weaver.

The loss dropped the Green Dragons to 0-2 on the season.

"The girls got a shot to see how it's done and will only get better," said Lake Placid coach Jennifer Miller. "We're a young team with not a lot of experience and we learn every time we step on the court."

Colby Royce, Ana Heredia and Deta Waller competed in the doubles action along with Henderson.

"We're a relatively young team," said Miller. "The girls are working hard and are eager to improve."

Lake Placid is back on the courts when they host LaBelle on Tuesday afternoon.
