LAKE PLACID - Barbara Lockwood didn't quite hit the lottery, but the million-dollar smile on her face definitely came about against the odds.
The Lake Placid retiree and Ohio native defied 67-million to 1 odds earlier this month when she saw every golfer's dream come true ... twice.
Lockwood hit two holes-in-one in a single round (18 holes), sinking her tee shots on holes 6 and 13 at Placid Lakes Country Club. The following is a Q & A session was held with Lockwood at her home course, and though it had been nearly two weeks since the feat happened, Lockwood couldn't hide her excitement.
Highlands Today: OK, so tell me about the shots themselves.
Barbara Lockwood: They were on 6 and 13, and on No. 6 it was 135 yards with my five-iron, and on 13, it was 98 yards with my nine-iron. Shane Ward, our pro, his brother Logan was behind us. So after I hit them, I made Logan go up and look in the hole, because I just couldn't believe that they could've gone in the hole.
HT: Describe the way your shots went in.
BL: At six, it hit on the green and rolled, and my husband (Bill) said, 'I think you're going to be close.' He was sitting in the cart and I said, 'I think it went in the hole!'
On 13, the pin was down in the gully and Bill hit it, and his was to the left of the pin. Then I hit mine and it went in the gully. We drove up, and Bill said "There's only one ball on that green!" I called for Logan and Bill whistled for him and he came up and looked, and there it was.
HT: What was your reaction?
BL: I was screaming and jumping up and down, and the lady that was with Logan, she was saying 'Girl Power!' On the second one, I got up on the green and was waving the flag back and forth.
HT: Were those your first holes-in-one?
BL: No, I actually have had one before. Those were my second and third.
HT: Wow. What's your handicap?
BL: It's about 15.
HT: OK, so were you feeling particularly good about your game that week? Was there any difference in how you felt before the round?
BL: Nope, we were really relaxed, it was slow playing that day on a Saturday afternoon. It was crazy. I called my nephew in Ohio, and he couldn't believe it, he was going crazy because he never had one. And then I called my 90-year old mother after the first one, in her nursing home. I said, 'Ma, this is Barb, I'm calling from the golf course. You're not going to believe this - I got a hole-in-one!'
She said, 'Great, I'll go down to the community and tell everybody.' I called her after the second one and said, 'Ma, this is Barb calling from the golf course.
And she goes, 'Don't you remember, you already called me!' She's pretty bright for 90 years old.
HT: Did you buy a lottery ticket night?
BL: Yes, and I matched two numbers.
HT: And I imagine you bought a few drinks after the round?
BL: We have a hole-in-one club, where everyone throws in five bucks. Whoever gets a hole-in-one gets the pot and has to buy drinks for everyone. So now I'm hoping someone else gets one, because it's a lot of work. Two years ago, a husband and wife got a hole-in-one and we were with them.
HT: Do you have more confidence in your iron play these days?
BL: I love my irons. I don't think I'm any more confident, but I don't like to putt, Shane's trying to get my over that. I prefer to do everything but putt.
HT: I imagine you have two new favorite holes here at Placid Lakes?
BL: I like 13, but six is hard. Usually 11 is the easiest one, but I don't know, I just can't explain it. It's just still unbelievable, people were just going crazy because they couldn't believe I did it. I birdied the next hole, too, to shoot an 81, which is a record now for ladies on the red tees. I'm not sure if it will stand - someone may go out and get three holes-in-one.
