PALMETTO - Cody Higgins was 2-for-4 with a two-run home run in the top of the sixth on Thursday to lead the Sebring baseball team to a 6-2 district-opening victory over Palmetto.

Dustin Lang threw five solid innings and Josh Chavis entered the game with bases loaded in the sixth and held the Tiger bats at bay to preserve the win.

"Cody's home run gave us a boost," said Sebring assistant coach Buck Rapp. "Then Josh was able to come in with the bases loaded and get a pop-out and a ground ball double play to end the inning."

Cody Hoffner added an RBI double, while Chavis picked up an RBI with on a squeeze play.

The Streaks, who improve to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in 4A-D10 play, host Bartow at 7 p.m. tonight (see Saturday's Highlands Today for result). They then take to Firemen's Field for their next two games, Friday vs. DeSoto and Tuesday vs. Booker. Both first pitches are set for 7 p.m.

SOFTBALL: Lake Wales 5, Sebring 0
LAKE WALES - The Sebring softball team managed just one hit on Tuesday, but they got a solid pitching performance from Haley Pack during a 5-0 loss to a talented Lake Wales team.

"Haley threw a gem," said Sebring coach Joe Sinness. "That's probably the best team we'll face all year and she gave up only six hits and really placed her pitches well."

Sammie Lower had Sebring's lone hit, a single up the middle. Sinness said the game showed the Streaks where they are as district play looms.

"Defensively, it was the best we've looked on the field," he said. "We're just going to have to make some adjustments at the plate."

The Streaks are back in action on Friday, when they host Booker. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
