It's impossible to understand why people do such stupid things. That's why trying to determine the motives of Nadya Suleman, "Miracle Mom," is not worth the mental gymnastics necessary to conjure some excuse. This single mother of new octuplets, who already had six children being raised by a grandmother, is just a twisted example of what goes on with too many people these days. They pump out children while taxpayers foot the bill.
Suleman has put a face on a problem that's plagued our country for some time. Some women and men think nothing of producing children when they have no way of taking care of them. We're not talking about people who fall on hard times and struggle. The problem is the people who are unemployed, have probably almost always been unemployed, have no health insurance or means to pay and still squeeze out babies from their teenage years and for years to come.
The sad part is there isn't much society can do about it. Forcible sterilization is unconstitutional and morally wrong. Cutting off aid to families leaves innocent children in real danger. It's unfair to punish children just because their mothers and fathers are irresponsible.
Suleman's particular case almost seems more like mental illness, but in a lot of instances, it's just plain laziness and lacking a conscience about milking public funding for anything and everything. It's also a vicious circle, where most of the time these young women who get pregnant are just mirroring their own mothers and grandmothers. The men who also are part of this are nowhere to be found, just like their fathers and grandfathers.
Throwing contraception at them, telling them to "Just say no to sex" doesn't work on these people. They see life differently than the rest of us. Their values and family traditions are warped, and the cycle of poverty they perpetuate is nearly impossible to break.
We pray for the babies. They can't help how they are brought into this world. Too often they spend their early years in an almost impossible situation, and their futures are fairly easy to predict. The cycle continues again, the public pays and more babies are born to parents who don't deserve the title of mother or father.
