SEBRING - The Highlands County Family YMCA is holding a special "Member Appreciation/Family Fun Day" from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. today.

Members can bring one guest for free to the event, which will feature recorded music and refreshments sold as a fund-raiser for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Highlands County.

"This is one way we try to show appreciation to our members," said David Scheck, program director for the Y, at 100 YMCA Lane, just off the intersection of Hammock Road and Lakewood Avenue.

Membership has doubled to more than 1,000 since the YMCA opened its new swimming pool and fitness center last April.

All proceeds from the sale of pizza and other refreshments will be donated to the Boys and Girls Clubs of Highlands County, which recently initiated a $25 per month fee due to declining contributions and rising costs.

About 400 children, from kindergarten through high school, attend the Boys and Girls Club's after-school program, which provides help with school work and supervised recreation.

"We want to do what we can to help the Boys and Girls Club in these economic times," Scheck said.

Papa John's is donating 20 pizzas and Tropical Cones and Candies will provide cotton candy and snow cones for the refreshment-sale fundraiser, he said.

Scheck also reported that an expansion of the YMCA's baby sitting facility was completed this past week. The day-care service is available from 9 a.m. to noon and 4-8 p.m. weekdays.
