AVON PARK - Freshman right-hander Kendra Wellnitz pitched a complete game and sophomore Amanda Leiter drove in the winning run to lead the South Florida Community College softball team to a 3-2 win over Brevard CC in eight innings on Thursday.
The victory salvaged a split of the doubleheader after Brevard won the first game 9-2 with the help of six Panther errors.
"We played and pitched well in the second game and were able to push across a run to win in extra innings," said SFCC coach Carlos Falla. "The first game we just kicked it around, but the girls bounced back with a good effort to end the day on a positive note."
The win improved South Florida to 7-10 on the season and the Panthers are back on the diamond with an away game at Indian River CC on Sunday afternoon.
"We start our conference games in a week and a half and we need to quit making errors," Falla said. "We need to stay focused and do the little things right and hopefully, we'll be playing a lot better by then."
