AVON PARK - Taking advantage of perfect weather, a well manicured River Greens golf course and perfect scoring conditions, the talented duo of Mike Shawver and Corey Decotzeri combined for a 12-under-par 60 to win the Championship Flight of the Avon Park Chamber of Commerce Valentine Golf Tournament on Saturday.
The 18-hole, annual event used a two-person scramble format and attracted a very strong field.
The team of Randy Wright and Tim Devlin placed second in the Championship Flight with a 63, while John Snyder and Randy Proctor finished third with a 64, after a match of cards.
Dan Armstrong and Marilyn Armstrong won the First Flight with a 63, while Dennis Dunn and Bev Dunn placed second with a 66.
Dale Anderson and Charlie Anderson finished third in the First Flight with a 67.
The duo of Daniel Milton and Chad Demeere won the very competitive Second Flight with a 75, after a match of cards with the team of Jim Brooks and Toni Brooks.
Ernie Bryant and Adam Greenslade took home third place in the Second Flight with a 76.
Closest-to-the-pin winners were Greg Kramer on hole No. 3, Jim Shondel on hole No. 12 and Larry Staggs on hole No. 17.
Greg Kramer won the closest-to-the-line contest which was held on the 18th hole.
The event is a fundraiser for the Avon Park Chamber of Commerce and Executive Director David Greenslade was thrilled with the turnout.
"I thought the tournament went very well," said Greenslade. "We had great weather, a good turnout and we can't thank the golfers and the tournament sponsors enough for their support.
"The proceeds from the event go to our general operating fund for the Avon Park Chamber of Commerce as we continue to promote the Avon Park community."
This is the 12th year for this event and it continues to grow in popularity.
"Golf is very popular in the Heartland and the event gets bigger and better each year," said Greenslade. "We're always thankful for the support we get from the community for all of our projects."
