MELBOURNE - The Lake Placid girls basketball team faced an uphill battle against Melbourne Central Catholic in Thursday night's Class 3A regional quarterfinals

The Green Dragons were playing without their best player - senior guard Kaneisha Hamilton - who was out with a knee injury suffered in last week's district title game against McKeel Academy.

Without Hamilton's steadying influence, Lake Placid, which was the District 10 runner-up, came out sluggish, while Melbourne Central Catholic, the District 11 champions, took advantage by cruising to a 56-15 win over the Green Dragons.

"We were no match for Melbourne Central Catholic," said Lake Placid coach Shonda Legree. "We came out a little slow and the game out of control early on.

"We were without Kaneisha and a couple of our girls had the flu, but we didn't come out with the kind of intensity that we needed if we hoped to make a game of it."

Despite the loss, Legree was pleased with the season the youthful Green Dragons put together and the veteran coach is looking forward to next year with a lot of optimism.

"We only lose Kaneisha off the squad," said the LP coach. "With the experience our younger players got his season and the talent we have coming back, next year should be a lot of fun.

"The girls had a good attitude and I'm already thinking of things we can do during the offseason to get better for next year."
