Failure to coddle prisoners does not constitute mistreatment. Our prison system should be and can be completely self-supporting. All prisoners should work 48 hours per week in constructive production with their eventual release contingent upon their production.
During the past 30-plus years we have become increasingly a consumer rather than a producer society. Whether it is prisoners, welfare recipients or any other freeloaders, the taxpayers are entitled to a return on their money. Not oversimplification: Establish the goal and then implement the goal. Paul told the Thessalonians, "If a man will not work, he shall not eat." Prolonged periods of consumption exceeding production inevitably results in economic chaos.
